Chapter 17

There was no doubt that the expression I’d thrown back at Leo was that of a stubborn child who was in no-way-no-how going to cooperate with what the adults had decided for me. However, having been on the receiving end of such an expression—too many times to count, I sat up straight in my spot on the couch, took in a deep breath, and then said, “What did you have in mind.”

Unfortunately for them, after listening to a short list of warden-style options, the only thing I was willing to agree to at this juncture, was with my stomach and the fact that it was time for lunch. “I really need to get something in my stomach—it’s been feeling wonky all morning,” I said, hoping to halt the domineering dialog still going on between the males in my life. “There will be plenty of time to talk more about my safety later.” I actually did finger air quote for the word safety, before pushing myself up off the couch.

Like a gentleman, Leo stood when I did. “Yes—we have time,” he said, though I wasn’t sure he believed his own words.

Admittedly, I respected these guys for their perseverance in wanting to keep me safe, but this was something we would have to work out together. I wouldn’t be told what to do. However, I would listen to their ideas. Just not now when my stomach was disagreeing with me.

Redmond, being the smart man that he was, knew that a hangry Lynn would not be a cooperative Lynn, and he got up from the couch as well, then said, “We promised Vicki and the others that we would be back for lunch.” He rubbed a warm hand across the middle of my back.

I turned my head to look up at Redmond, and then Gabriel. Refocusing on Leo, I took in a cleansing breath, and said, “Thank you, for making time to speak with us—to inform us, of what’s been going on. I understand your concern regarding my safety, and I promise you I will be back in touch to discuss further on how we can….” I breathed out as the nausea all but faded away. “… come to an agreement—create a plan, on how to keep the Earthbound from discovering more about me—and my skills.” I cut a glance to Gabriel, then turned my attention back to Leo. “We’ll get back to you later—okay?”

“Of course,” Leo said, graciously. “This must be a lot to take in, and I understand your resistance to changing how you conduct your life. But please know that we only have your best interest in mind.” He gave me a heartfelt smile, one that reached his eyes, then he turned toward the main entrance.

As Redmond and I moved to the double doors, I glanced around realizing that Gabriel had vanished. Max and Julian reappeared then, entering from down the hall. Max stepped up and opened the panel door to the closet and retrieved our coats.
